The Betty Taylor House

Betty Taylor House 2014The current house was built in 1938 in the Art Moderne style. Typical of this style are the flat roof, round wall and stucco exterior. This style is relatively rare in Burlington, making it an exceptional landmark

The house was built for Elizabeth “Betty” Taylor, a famous track and field athlete (City of Burlington n.d). Betty moved into the house after her retirement from competing in hurdle events. Her career began at a young age. She was just 14 when she competed and won in the 60-metre hurdles at the 1930 British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario (City of Burlington n.d). It was described as one of “the most spirited races of the day” (Globe and Mail 1930). At this event she also won the javelin throw.

Betty studied at Central Collegiate in Hamilton, and continued to compete in local and international events. She may have been inspired by the Canadian women’s track and field team that performed well at the 1928 Olympics. Later Betty attended McMaster University on an athletic scholarship and in 1934 she competed in the British Empire Games and Women’s World Games held in London, England (LACAC n.d.).

Betty Taylor house 1998The 1936 Olympics in Berlin were her last competition. She was there as one of only 13 women on the 104 member Canadian Team. It was recorded that she “missed Olympic glory by an eyelash” (Dulmage 1939). Reports from the day state, “in the final, Taylor was in front going over the final hurdle when she was accidently elbowed in the ribs by Trebisonda Valla of Italy. Thrown off stride momentarily, she produced a gallant recovery, but was placed forth by the judges and quickly departed the stadium heartbroken” (Unknown 1936). The photo finish had to be examined to determine the winner. Betty prevailed and was awarded the Bronze medal (City of Burlington n.d.). At this time she was also given the Lou Marsh Trophy, given to an outstanding Canadian Athlete. The Canadian Press also awarded her the “Outstanding Girl” athlete award.
